National Parks

The first national park in Turkey was established in 1958. Since then their number has grown significantly and today there are 33 official national parks in Turkey. The reason for the transformation of these areas into national parks is not only their beauty but also the large number of endemic plants and rare animal species that they contain. An example for this is the Köprülü Canyon National Park which is home to Cupressus sempervirens natural forests that no longer exist elsewhere in the world. These rich habitats where biological diversity is being protected are distributed throughout the whole country and toady Turkey’s 33 official national parks are of great interest to visitors. There are also 16 areas which have been recognized as nature reserves or natural parks because of their aesthetic, botanical, and scientific value.
