Taurus Mountains
The Taurus (Toros) Mountains are the westernmost branches of the great Himalayan mountain range that stretches across all of Asia. The Taurus Mountains follow the Southern border of Anatolia and are generally composed of four major sections: the Central, Western, Southern, and Southeastern Taurus ranges. The highest peaks rise from the Central and Southeastern parts of the Taurus Mountains.
Running from the Southwest to the Northeast for approximately 50 km is the Ala range that forms form a stretch of magnificently rugged mountains. In fact, it is the region most suitable for hiking and mountaineering and for this reason the most popular destination in the Taurus Mountains. It passes through the region's highest peak, Demirkazik (3756 m). Other high summits include Kizilkaya (3725 m), and Mt.Vayvay (3565 m). Interesting rock formations and waterfalls, and fascinating karstic topography and hydrography are typical views that the Taurus Mountains provide. Both the Mediterranean and Anatolian weather systems influence the climate of the Ala Mountains, bringing warm summers and cool winters to the area.
The best season to climb the Ala Mountains starts in May and lasts till August. This is the time when alpine meadows of the higher elevations are rich in vegetation. Trips usually begin from either Camardi or Cukurbad village. Both of these villages lie 65 km from Nigde and can be reached easily by road.
